Workshop Description:

This five-day watercolor workshop, painting landscapes and people in landscapes, will reflect the title of Mel’s book, Watercolor:  Simple, Fast, & Focused.  Emphasis will be on design principles with the objective of building strong paintings by seeing and thinking simply, painting quickly and energetically, and focusing on the “idea” of the painting.  Mel captures the essence of subjects in a loose, representational style.  Design, composition, and color/value relationships will be discussed throughout.

The workshop is designed for beginners to advanced painters.  It includes daily morning demonstrations with a step-by-step simple explanation of solutions to every problem presented by the subject, personal instruction, and critiques.  Mel creates a casual, friendly atmosphere allowing an easy, open dialogue with his students making each workshop a joyful experience.

BRUSHES:  Winsor& Newton, Robert Simmons, Jack Richeson, Raphael and Isabey are quality brands.

No. 12 and No. 14 round synthetic hair or sable
(No. 8 or No. 10 will do if you plan to work 15” or 12” or smaller)
1” flat synthetic hair or sable
2” flat synthetic hair or sable
            No. 4 rigger
The sable and nylon synthetics are less expensive to buy than pure kolinsky sables and they do the job; however, a No. 12 round kolinksky sable is of superior quality and an overall good size to work with.

Large, natural sponge for wetting paper
            Rectangular cellulose, synthetic sponge
            Tissues
Roll of paper towels or rag for wiping brushes
            Flat, plastic container, approximately  6” x 9” x  2” to hold water
            Sketch book
            Kneaded eraser
            #2B or 4B pencil (no “h” pencils)
